THE MINDS BEHIND FOOTBALL

Scottish Cup Final – Celtic have a psychological edge over Rangers

by | May 24

Celtic have not lost a single Glasgow Derby this season, and the psychological boost that gives them going into this game can not be understated.

In several Old Firm matchups this season Celtic have not shown up, but have still found a way to get a result, which all the best teams do.

But it almost feels like there is a mental block with this group of Rangers players on Derby day, as seen in their last meeting which handed their rivals the league title.

Cyriel Dessers had just equalised, in a must win game to save their season, and just as you feel the momentum is swaying, John Lundstrum picks up a red card for a reckless challenge on Alistair Johnston

This almost sums up Rangers’ mentality on Derby day. Players like Lundstrum seem to be more focussed on trying to show the fans they care, by putting a mark on another player, than winning the game itself.

When you look at the Rangers squad, it’s only Cyriel Dessers and James Tavernier who look mentally capable of producing match winning moments.

Whereas the Celtic side has winners all over the pitch, who will have all the confidence in the world, fresh off winning the league in emphatic form.

It often feels that Rangers players believe they have lost the fixture before it has even started, almost always starting on the backfoot, and even conceding in just 21 seconds back in April.

Obviously in football any team can win on the day, but Celtic are heavy favourites due to their strong mentality.
