THE MINDS BEHIND FOOTBALL

‘It becomes natural instinct’: Manchester City’s winning mentality

by | May 29

Manchester City epitomise winning trophies. The club achieved a historic fourth successive English league title two weeks ago, and its fair to say it was almost inevitable.

But how have Manchester City created this winning mentality and culture?

Despite the outside noise claiming City have paid for their achievements, with the looming investigation into their 115 charges, money can’t be seen as the singular reason for winning.

Seven Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, two FA Cups, six League Cups are just a few to mention, all under various managers.

Pep Guardiola recently said in a press conference that if it was the money, then “Manchester United should have won all the titles, Chelsea – all the titles, Arsenal – all the titles. They spend as much money in the last five years as us.”

He compared it with Leicester winning the league, and Girona’s success in La Liga this season, claiming there is much more to creating a winning team.

Pete Lowe, former head of education at Manchester City has been in the thick of an elite club who settles for nothing but trophies. He said: “A club installs winning mentality over a long period of time.”

“When I first arrived at Manchester City, we weren’t the great force in world football that they are today.

“It took years and years of foundations being built, followed by employing staff who had this desire to win and always want to achieve more.

“It takes so much dedication and determination to reach the top, but that’s not even half of it.

“The hardest part is maintaining that level and desire to keep winning. But at City, it become a natural instinct for the club.”

Pete added that at Manchester City everyone played a massive role in the team’s cohesion, and this inclusive environment means that everyone can recognise their contribution to the team’s performances.

“People often forget that there is so much that goes into a club in order to create a winning team. Many people are quick to jump on the band wagon that the players orchestrate success, but it is often the backroom staff off the pitch that make things possible.”

To be able to increase performance and results each season is challenging enough, but to do it in the climate in one of the best leagues in the world with the investment and quality there is now, makes it a totally different beast altogether- making Manchester City’s success that more special.
